It was Mark Cobley's idea. My sequence is called Argon & the colourful - I used a typewriter & scannd the results in. I have no idea what it looks like in the book, but I hope it's green.

I've also provided a niner sequence for something, possible angel exhaust - i don't know, details are sketchy, but I used the typewriter for them too. It's refreshing using a different type of keyboard, & it makes each word definite, harder to erase.

Another note - I'll soon be sending off my Dusie Toad sequence from the willows-inspired poems. It's now called TOAD-WHOOPS, & I'm happier with it than I am with the two above sequences. It's been revised & revised & here is a clip:

Last year a lot of poets and small press publishers on this list were very generous in donating a lot of books to the Openned Land For Lajee Reading (Oct 2009) so we could raise money to send to the Lajee Centre in Palestine.
An opportunity has come up that will allow us to say thank you to you all once more in a much more material way: the Openned Table @ Café 1001.
Openned is setting up a book table in conjunction with Café 1001 in London's East End.
Openned will have a presence at Café 1001 on the first Saturday of every month. The first event is on Saturday 5th June and runs from 12 - 6 pm.
Attendance is free as long as you bring one book to donate to Café 1001's Book Orphanage. The book orphanage is a large bookshelf in the main bar space where anyone can wonder in and read a book, for free, and then put it back on the shelf for the next person to read.
Alongside the selling of books on the Openned Table (which is in fact two tables, and more if we need it) there will also be some very short three-minute Openned Readings throughout the day.
This is a real opportunity for us as a community to claim a regular physical space in London for the exchange, and perhaps more importantly the sale, of our poetry. So please, if you are a poetry publisher or a magazine editor, interested in selling your books at the Openned Table, or even a poet interested in reading at the event or donating poetry books for free to the Book Orphanage, or for sale at the table, please Contact us (dezmona@gmail.com). Priority will be given to those offering new works of poetry that have been published in little magazines or by small presses.
Lots has to be worked out in a short amount of time, such as how to get the books to Steve (located in Whitechapel, London) within two weeks and how to get the money back to the individual publishers that wish to sell books on the Openned Table. We are putting the word out now to give us time to organise this with interested parties.
Openned will be taking no cut from any of this activity. You set the rates. All money goes back to the publishers/poets. All we ask is that one book is donated to the Book Orphanage.

Still no baby, it's about 10 days overdue. I have moved into new house, settled into gardening lots and making things out of wood. Experiments have been on hold. I have a plan for a quick poetry sequence but life is pleasantly slow at the moment. Still out of work. Nothing round here.

Couple of weeks, but it's looking good.

An online publication by Arthur Shilling will also be released in the next couple of weeks, perhaps today.

Experiments have been slow: I have 3 immersed in liquids in jars: bleach, coke & urine. All doing well.

I am just waiting to move house, then will have to get that in order. Then a baby should come, & I will have to get that in order.

Poetry is going to be on the back seat for a good few weeks :(

The poem is translated into morse code. This is then converted into 'literal' morse code.

Effect on Reading :

The literal translation allows the reader to read out the morse code poem [instead of using a morse code machine as in 1]. This creates the feeling of reading a simple foreign language and requires patience and concentration on behalf of the reader. There is no doubt it is a long reading, after some time vision begins to blur and it is impossible, without familiarity with morse code, to determine any words and uncover the original poem. The reader can play with imitating the staccato of the original morse code machine, or can investigate with rhythms and intonation. The limit of sounds encourages this play.

I have recently received the newest Crater - a beautiful production by Richard Parker of a wonderful poem by Amy De'Ath.

I have also recently received Gareth Farmer's 'MOCK INTO THE BRAZEN DAY'. It's been created by 'Farmer Workforce #1' in association with ytcomms. I love the way the cover image has been created by sticking coloured card on coloured card on the cover-card. I shall try to infuse this into Arthur Shilling in the future. I have yet to crack into reading this yet.

The poem has been converted into many thin poems, prompting the reader to explore and focus on selected phonetics of the language. The reader also has to take care when handling the poems, for fear of losing them, they are so delicate yet flexible and meaty. Once they are held, the reader cannot wait to begin the reading.

The reader is able to give a convincing performance, getting the mouth around the sounds and utilising the spaces, the reading could last much longer than that of the original poem. It is an effective deconstruction, providing the reader with plenty of material to work with. Very few words remain complete, giving the recognition that this is a scrap of a poem, not just an alphabet of sounds.

Effect on Reading:

The reader knows not where to start. Presented with folded segments that do not fold out into an easily recognisable, linear narrative, the reader is forced to dive in and start reading where they can. The reader has to turn the paper to read some words and it is difficult to decide where to start reading on the next turn. The poem seems shorter (large sections are missing, presumed digested) yet gains a feeling of the indefinite; the reader has no visual indication as to where the end of the poem may be; indeed, the reader has to make his own decision when to stop the reading.

The poem is taped into the position a doormat would take for one week.

Result:

The poem is worn and dirty, torn and gritty.

Effect on Reading:

Many words of the poem have been altered or worn away leading to significant changes in the reading of the text: "Oce is aiways closer to a shd response...", "...sceptics claim poetics i super to an chef whip being tested...", "...relayed through an imp array...", "regrettable lapss of concentration". The poem has become playful, creating figures within a poem that has previously been empty of (with the exception of the "unauthorised bystanders"). The mud marks can be read as stresses ("tantrums") and this makes for a lively reading, though leaves you feeling dirty by the end.

The poem is lit with a match.

Result:

The poem was not engulfed as much as expected (hoped). This could be due to any number of factors.
The flame bit a jagged, butterfly shape into the paper, obscuring words and creating new meanings in sentences: "Poetics is [...] try this side of the Atlantic," & "glorified acceptence of [.]nes [...] by the front desk". Wafts of 'what's that burning smell?' hit the readers nose, distracting them from the reading at hand. Overall, a rather pretty result, but with quite a disappointing effect on the reading itself.

A Year in Poetry

On the evening of November 30th, 2008, I attended the Reality Street Book of Sonnets second launch at Roehampton University. Since then I attended as many poetry readings as I could: Openned, Blue Buses, Xing the Lines, as well as the odd launch/festival. I've met fantastic, friendly & welcoming people, people who have encouraged me to write, to continue with my publishing, people who have supported my projects.
2010 promises to be busy: Cleaves ONE is due out on the 14th January. There are 4 chapbooks due out from The Arthur Shilling Press in the first couple of months. My partner is having our baby in May. We will be moving again, within Devon. Eventually I'll have a job, though where I'll find the time, I don't yet know.

This blog is run by Mark Cobley (whose long poem 'The Flaming Man', is 1/3 published by Tom Jenk's Parameter Magazine, and the following 2/3 will be published next year by The Arthur Shilling Press, also available online through red ceilings), and it collects work from a number of poets: Richard Barrett, Alec Newman, Gareth Durasow are a few that stick out for me. Red Ceilings, I feel, takes a Shearsman attitude towards poetry, mixing the experimental with the more traditional. It is well worth a look.

New Journal Proposal

Poets will volunteer (they will!) to be the editor for their local scene. Scenes so far accounted for (though currently editorless):

London
South East - Brighton
Bristol/South West
North West - Liverpool/Manchester
North East - Nottingham
Poland/Denmark/Turkey - Marcus Slease

Volunteer editors will be given 3/4 pages to edit a selection of 3 poets’ work (this may include their own). This 3/4 page limit will not be explicit and is welcome to abuse.

The editors can each create/commission their own cover or use the online version (created/commissioned by the webmaster).

All editors will pool their editorials together via a “webmaster” - who will compile the pages and send it back out to the editors.

The editors will be responsible for printing, distributing & selling the journal at their scene - for example, through a specific reading, or by hawking it at any possible moment.

The journal will always be available online, under the care of the webmaster.

Once an issue has been completed, the volunteer editors must choose (or ask for volunteers) for a new editor from their scene. The revolving editorial process should limit favouritism and give poets a chance to edit who would not have the time to edit a regular journal. The webmaster will remain constant.

The journal will probably be called Cleave or Cleaves.

The journal should aim to be completed every 2 - 3 months.

I have begun the Robin Hood sequence of sonnets. I'm not sure where I'm going with them. They're in the form of letters from RH to Marian & he is outlawing himself from the city. The sequence starts of detailing city life & will juxtapose this with detailing the wild life - which I guess I'll get round to writing when I do the same thing.

How can I tell if these balls aren't just previous balls effected by the tide? 3 balls were spotted heading inland today, they will be posted later, but what if I find them upstream, stranded, how will I know? Do I have to get in the river and mark them? Can anyone lend me a boat?
